CHAPTER SIXTEEN

- Teresa

Sinking into the couch, I take another long swig of the cold beer I’m holding, wondering what the fuck really happened earlier. I’m still shaking from the close call, but it all happened so fast.

I mean, it’s clear that Payak saved me. Whether it would’ve killed me or not is hard to say, but still. Scary as fuck.

What I’m really relieved about is Jade! I was so sure she fell to her death. I was positive I was going to find her broken and bloody body on the concrete floor below me when I got down.

I never got the chance because I saw that shadow coming for me, and then I must have been knocked unconscious. It didn’t feel like it, but all of a sudden, I was surrounded by colorful lights and then on a bed in a foggy clearing—which makes absolutely no sense. All I did was lay there frozen, panting as I recovered and tried to determine if I was dead.

I’d almost decided I was when swirling colors surrounded me, and I woke up in the warehouse on the floor next to Jade. According to Desin, he caught Jade. Impressive considering how high she was, but she was just sitting up as I threw my arms around her, too relieved for words.

Everyone was livid, and I’m just waiting to see what kind of fallout this causes. We didn’t have any excuse for being there, and I haven’t seen Jade since I was escorted out by Payak and Cam before they took off to “talk.” I’ve sent her a million texts, but nothing has come through from her yet.

My cell phone rings on the coffee table in front of me. I’m debating ignoring it, since I don’t recognize the number, but I know that’s a bad idea. Avoiding the situation isn’t going to make it go away.

“Teresa Bradfeld speaking. How can I help you?” I announce, but at first, all I hear in heavy breathing. “Hello?”

A few seconds pass, and I’m about to hang up when I hear the deep, rumbling voice that never fails to vibrate down to my toes. “Are you alone?”

Oh, fucking hell. Standing up, I turn in a slow circle, my mind spinning right along with me. Visions of the day we were together in his bedroom … then last night under the stars and what a gentleman he was … and then earlier when he saved me … it all spins together making me speechless.

I wasn’t expecting to hear from him. Cam, definitely, but this … this is why it’s so important to take it slow with him. The effect just his voice has on me is mind blowing. I hate feeling this … lack of control. And where is he calling from that his name didn’t even show up on my cell?

I hear him draw in a deep breath as he waits, letting it out with an exasperated sigh. Giving up, he states, “I’ll be right there.”

Darting into my bedroom, I look down at the holey sleep shirt I’m wearing.
